Implications for Teaching

What are the implications of tools such as Mathematica and MathCAD for the teaching and learning of mathematics? What are the issues, problems, benefits, challenges, and dangers?

a. With access to a projector and a computer, the teacher could project MathCAD on the screen, replacing the use of a chalkboard. It can also be used to create both tests and the keys for the tests. It is an efficeint way to produce workable sets of problems, possibly for homework use..

However, students should only use thew program when they already know how to do the work. They can use the program to check their answers for problems they worked on.. The biggest drawback with this programs is if students use the program before they understand the concepts and mechanics of the math. Its possible they can use the program and not have a solid understanding of concepts replicated by the program.

Should mathematics teachers be required to have mastery of such programs? Why or why not?

b. Teachers already know the math, so learning the program will allow them new ways to present difficult, abstract material to students in a new way. They are a positive addition to any classroom and the educational process. While schools are increasing the amount of computers in the classroom, they should acquire a variety of programs like this one. Funding is a difficult issue at this time, but ut should be viewed as a positive investment for the student body and faculty. Grants and other programs can be looked into to get funding.

How should such software be incorporated into the mathematics or science curriculum?

c. This software could be used as a virtual chalkboard, as a tool to create worksheets and tests, and as a checking point for each student to use as they complete their homework. It should prove to be very useful in a science or math classroom, when students might need reminders of the mathematical principles they need to master
